COVID Homecoming

Fall 2020

During my senior year of high school, which unfortunately took place in 2020… and the COVID pandemic, there was a distinct lack of normalcy – no in-person classes, no cross country season, and certainly no traditional senior year homecoming. Despite these challenges, I took on the role of social media coordinator for my school during my junior and senior years. Throughout the pandemic, I played a vital part in disseminating essential information, including class schedules, COVID-19 updates, and meal distributions to students and families. In an effort to inject a sense of normalcy and celebration into this unconventional senior year, I decided to organize an online Homecoming.

Acting as a one-person team, I embarked on creating a virtual social media homecoming. This involved reaching out to teachers across all departments, encouraging them to create entertaining videos related to the chosen theme – "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Each day of the "online homecoming" represented a different element. I collaborated with teachers to showcase their skills, such as creating videos explaining the chemistry of fire or learning about the biology of water.

Beyond teachers, I also engaged with students and various school groups, including artists, choir performances, and even the color guard. Despite taking on the project solo, the end result gave the impression that the entire school, though virtual, had united for a memorable homecoming experience. This project brought me joy, providing a semblance of normalcy and celebration during an otherwise challenging senior year.
